Eastern Southland has many fascinating heritage attractions. There is a variety of museums in the area, including the Gore Historical Museum, Wyndham and Districts Historical Museum, the Mataura Museum in the historic Clematis Cottage, the Hokonui Pioneer Village and Museum set in a sprawling park, and the Hokonui Moonshine Museum which celebrates Gore's part in the colourful history of illicit whiskey making and consumption.
Another spectacular display of heritage is the Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre at Mandeville. This nationally significant display features restored vintage aircraft – most of which can actually still fly!
